LAUGHTER IS TRULY A GREAT MEDICINE

During Mom's care at home and being medicated for her comfort, Mom has been quite the comedian.  Keeping us all in laughs with her unusual and nonsense sayings.  It became apparent that this all needed to be written down since many things that she uttered were so priceless.

We'd all be in tears one moment because of Mom's ill health, the next, she'd open her eyes and entertain us with something that would quickly shift our tears of sadness to tears of joy.  At one point, Mom had traveled verbally all over the United States.  Another time she had us all laughing about total goofiness that made absolutely no sense.  She'd play a simple card game where she would make up the rules.  Rules that weren't even close to the game that had been picked out, like UNO.  To us, Mom made the rules and that was perfectly fine.  At least she was communicating in some shape or form.

We'd capture photos and video clips to remember the moments we all were able to share with Mom.  Moments that none of us will ever forget.

One evening, we all tried to go to bed by 9pm.  We'd say our goodnights to her and walk out of the room.  One of us girls would eventually return shortly, only to have all of us back in the room again.  We eventually did this three times until our 9pm bedtime turned into midnight.

One of those moments was when Dad reached down to sing in to Mom's good ear.  He softly sang a Louie Armstrong rendition of Wonderful World.  At some points, all of us girls would join in with Dad...choking out the words through our tears because of the tender moments.

When the song was finished, we all talked about how we could never listen to that song again the same way and began joking about how it would effect our jobs when it would be played at work.

The next evening, we had family gathered all over their room.  We were standing next to her bed, laying on the bed next to her or sitting on the floor. Mom was slightly coherent, but our evening was still filled with interesting quips from her that would get us all laughing so hard.  She is so precious to all of us.

She'd be resting peacefully one moment, then open her eyes, look around briefly and present us with whatever had come out of her mouth without any thought of what she was saying.  Every sentence uttered usually had us belly laughing uncontrollably.

Before we knew it, Dad had grabbed her wig off of the Styrofoam head, put it on his head and tied a red scarf around like a headband.  He then got his guitar out and began singing a Willie Nelson song followed by many other songs that I remember him getting the family to join in when I was a child.

After several moments of song and laughs because of Dad's impromptu entertainment, he took the wig off.  Lisa captured the entertainment on video and pictures were taken to remember the evening.  Before we knew it, Mom's wig was being passed around to all for a fitting.  The camera would snap the memory.  The light would flash and Mom woke to see the entertainment before her.  After a few family members tried on her wig for a photo opportunity, Mom spoke up and said, "Oh, all of you look so lovely."  The room soon filled with laughter.  After several moments of this, we soon all slowly dispersed to our rooms for the night in hopes to get some rest.
